By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and use basic Italian prepositions in simple sentences.
What are prepositions?
Prepositions are small words that show relationships between things, like:
- place (in, on, under)
- time (at, before, after)
- direction (to, from)
Common simple prepositions (preposizioni semplici)

Prepositions and articles (preposizioni articolate)
When prepositions are followed by a definite article (like il, la, lo, l’, i, gli, le), they often combine into a single word:

Example:
- Il gatto è sul divano. → The cat is on the couch.
- Vado alla stazione. → I’m going to the station.
Tips to remember
- Use “a” with cities: a Roma, a Milano
- Use “in” with countries and regions: in Italia, in Toscana
- Use “da” to say where you’re coming from or to say “at someone’s place”: vado da Marco (I’m going to Marco’s)
- Italian sentence structure is like in English: Subject – Verb – Object (SVO).
